Tallinn City Hall

Tallinn Town Hall is the oldest surviving town hall in all of Scandinavia and the Baltics, and the only one in the Gothic style. When the King of Denmark confirmed the city law of Lübeck to Tallinn in 1248, a council elected from among the Hanseatic merchants began to work. As a meeting place of the town hall, a small one-storey town hall with a basement in its present location already existed in the middle of the 13th century. The town hall, first mentioned in the land register in 1322, was a building with a large meeting room and a huge warehouse at that time. In the years 1402-1404, the town hall was built to its current size, following the previously established basic plan determined by foundations.

In 1530, a wind flag called Old Toomas was installed on the top of the tower, which has become one of the symbols of Tallinn. A man wearing the clothes of a 16th-century city guard bears the flag today with the year 1996. In 1627, the town hall received a new, late Renaissance-style tower helmet. Simultaneously with the completion of the tower, the copper smith Daniel Pöppel made copper plate water switches depicting dragon heads for the town hall.
